Avoid manual handling of large drums

WORKSAFE Victoria has issued a health and safety solution for handling of 205L drums.

According to WorkSafe Victoria, workers should not manually transfer product from 205L drums. Instead, they should use an intermediate bulk container with powered mechanical aid and a funnel or tap.

WorkSafe Victoria says manually moving heavy drums involves pulling or pushing while bending and twisting. This can cause musculoskeletal injuries, particularly to the back, arms, shoulders and knees.

This risk can be reduced by using an IBC with a funnel or tap to empty the drums. Other aids include a forklift with drum attachment to handle the drum, as well as drum movers or lifters with tipper.
