MACMAHON Holdings and Leighton Contractors say BHP Billiton has awarded them a $500m railway construction contract.

The joint venture between Macmahon Holdings and Leighton Contractors will be responsible for the double tracking of sections of the Mt Newman rail line, part of BHP Billiton’s Rapid Growth Project 5.

This involves duplicating 220km of the existing railway line between Port Hedland and Shaw Siding.

The joint venture will construct more than 1000 camp rooms, conduct 1.2m cubic metres of earthworks, construct ten new dual track bridges, lay the duplicate railway track and install 840km of fibre optic cable.

Work will begin on site immediately and is expected to be completed during the second half of 2010.
