Case study: automatically cleaning complex parts

COMPRESSED Air Australia has written a case study about an application of their compressed air technology to clean critical automotive transmission parts.

A manufacturer of automotive transmissions needed to clean off the chips and coolant that were left behind on the parts after machining the castings. The complexity of the components with numerous blind holes, recesses and grooves made cleaning very difficult.

Additionally, the cleaning needed to be thorough, as any chips or shavings left behind would cause transmission to fail. Attempts at using several air nozzles to blow the chips away in the automated process were unsuccessful.

To eliminate the problem, the manufacturer installed a series of EXAIR 51mm Super Air Amplifiers along with a number of Super Air Nozzles. The arrangement was placed directly above the transmission housing as it exited the machining centre.

The transmission housings were completely cleaned as the nozzles and amplifiers were carefully aimed and positioned to blow the debris from the hard-to-reach spaces.

According to EXAIR, the complexity of the application meant just using one type of air nozzle was insufficient. The amplifiers produced focused, high velocity airstream for blowing off flat surfaces, while the air nozzles could apply more directed force to clean blind holes, chips and grooved areas.
