ENVIRONMENTAL Clean Technologies (ECT) and Thang Long have proposed to build a coldry plant in the Latrobe Valley.
The companies want to use brown coal from Loy Yang Power or TRUenergy Yallourn mines as the feed material for the proposed plant.
According to Environmental Clean Technologies, the coal drying plant would create more than 1000 jobs, and reduce carbon emissions from local power stations.
Under the proposals, ECT would start building the $6b plant in 2010, with completion due for 2013. The coldry plant would produce two million tonnes of coldry pellets per annum within three years, with a target of 20 million tonnes per annum by 2020.
Coldry pellets are dehydrated brown coal, which replaces the coal being burned at power stations.
Partner power stations would provide hot water from their cooling towers, which would then be returned to them after the process. Partner power stations may also have the option of buying the pellets at a discounted rate.
For every two tonnes of brown coal, the coldry plant would produce one tonne of dried pellets and 1000L of water. This volume of water could also be sold.
