GLADSTONE LNG says Queensland authorities have accepted the design of its membrane tank technology for storing liquid natural gas.
Gladstone LNG plans to build and operate a 200,000 cubic metre membrane LNG tank at its Fisherman’s Landing site.
According to company, the Queensland approving authorities have extensively challenged the safety of the tank’s design, and are now satisfied that the membrane tank can provide a level of safety equivalent to a traditional full containment LNG storage tank, provided a number of conditions are in place.
On its part, Gladstone LNG has reviewed the conditions and assessed them as acceptable and in accordance with good engineering practice.
Gladstone LNG says the use of a membrane LNG tank will provide a cost reduction of approximately $100m, and time savings of possibly six months over a conventional nickel steel tank.
