NSW-BASED Exide Technologies says customers are increasingly moving to ‘greener’ forklift battery products even though they cost more initially than the traditional flooded product.
According to the company, it supplied a major food distribution centre with over 700 Liberator batteries and 400 chargers for its fleet of forklifts.
The batteries are said to have various environmental benefits and features which lead to ongoing savings. They are low-maintenance, eliminating the need for weekly watering, and also emit less carbon.
Other options available from the company’s range include a low maintenance battery which requires topping up every two or three months, as well as maintenance-free products which use Gel and Absorbed Glass Mat technology.
According to the battery manufacturer, the initial outlay is often misleading, because the cheapest starting price could end up costing end-users more over the life of the battery.
It claims lead-acid battery power can reduce carbon dioxide emissions while providing operational savings. In 2007, the company recycled over 25,000t of vehicular batteries in its New Zealand smelter. It says more than 97% of battery lead can be recycled into secondary lead.
