Handle with care: wine supply chains to be discussed

CSIRO is hosting a workshop in Melbourne from 13 to 16 January 2009, where wine industry logistics experts will discuss ways of improving the international wine supply chains.

The Wine Supply Chain Council (WSCC) meeting will involve 25 industry leaders. Researchers from CSIRO and Monash University, as well as managers from Yalumba and Orlando Wines will be present at the workshop.

The Australian wine export industry is worth $2.46 billion. According to CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences research leader, Dr Simon Dunstall, a major issue is the reduction of environmental impacts arising from transporting wine and grape juice.

Other topics to be discussed include reducing the time from order to merchandise reception, harvest planning, packaging wines, the future of the supply chains, and changing climate and consumer preferences.
