Industry trials aim to improve terminal performance

SYDNEY Ports Corporation will be undertaking three industry trials to improve the performance of Port Botany’s container terminals and reduce its logistics costs.

From 16 February 2009, Sydney Ports will undertake a two-week trial to benchmark the port’s performance to support greater transparency of industry logistics chain performance.

This is the first of three trials, and will look at slot availability and utilisation, vehicle processing times, container dwell times, and the possibilities for electronic processing. It will produce recommendations for measures to improve performance.

The second trial, due in April, will collect the data to validate these measures.

Overall, the project will aim to reduce landside delay around Port Botany’s cargo terminals, and reduce the total cost of road and rail logistics by promoting consistent landside service by all service providers.
