LINFOX has launched a scheme which it claims will reduce its carbon footprint by up to 15% in two years.
The GreenFox scheme includes measures such as getting drivers to slow down in order to optimise use of vehicles, and increasing solar energy use in warehouses.
According to the company, the scheme aims to implement short term practical goals. It said it mapped its own emissions profile and found diesel contributed 80% of the emissions, followed by electricity at 13%. It will concentrate on these two areas.
The company was sceptical of the effects of new trucking technology, claiming it will not “make an appreciable dint in emissions”. In any case, it would take Australia too long to adapt to the technology, because it does not build trucks or develop fuel and trucking technology.
Under the scheme, drivers will be asked to skip shifting gears, accelerate gradually and use the momentum from the mass of the trucks. The fleet will also be cut to minimise empty running.
The company is also looking at other energy-saving measures such as using airbags between trailers to optimise airflow.
