ROBE River Mining, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, has awarded a rail construction contract to Macmahon Holdings.

The contract, worth $65 million, will involve Macmahon constructing 50km of rail lines to extend the existing Deepdale line.

The extension will lead to a new mine site at Mesa A in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

It will also construct an additional 3km of rail siding at Churdy pool, and will undertake the earthworks and drainage for the rail line.

The project is expected to start in July, with a completion date slated for May 2009
