Olympic Dam haulage damage update

BHP Billiton says its ore haulage operations at the Olympic Dam mine will be at 25% capacity for six months.

On 6 October 2009, a hoisting system failure caused a fully loaded ore skip to fall down the Clarke mine shaft. This in turn caused another skip to collide with the headframe on the top of the shaft.

In BHP Billiton’s first-quarter production report, the company says it will recommence full production in the third quarter of the 2010 financial year.

The company has not ruled out redundancies during the period of reduced production. It has also yet to make a statement regarding the status of its smelter.
