BHP Billiton has closed its main Pilbara railway after a rail maintenance worker was killed on the line.

The BHP worker was killed at 3.30am on 24 February 2009, at a location 74km south of Port Hedland. This is the fourth death at BHP’s Pilbara operations in seven months.

The WA Department of Mines and Petroleum says one of its inspectors is at the site investigating the incident.

Update: Shortly after this story was posted, BHP Billiton announced it had reopened the line, and there were no interruptions to mining.
