Report on transport and storage industries reveals trends

THE LOGISTICS Association of Australia (LAA) has collaborated with Logistics Bureau to present what has been touted as the first definitive report on the state of the industry in Australia.

According to the LAA, it will provide annual updates of the report on the state of the supply chain and logistics industry.

The Supply Chain Report 2008 found transport and logistics have a total product equal to 14.5% of Australia’s gross domestic product.

Freight volumes have grown, and Japan is the nation’s largest export market, followed by China. Although air freight has a significant share, sea still dominates. Road is the major player in domestic freight, but rail is catching up.

The transport and storage industry is the seventh largest employing industry locally, with growth predicted at an average rate of 1.6% per annum in the next five years, with storage seeing strong figures.

In the long term, fuel prices are likely to remain a major challenger to for the industry, while climate change and carbon accounting will generate industry initiatives to lower emissions.
