Research project to enhance thickener performance

AMIRA International has announced a new research project aimed at enhancing the performance of thickeners used in hydrometallurgy and other minerals processing and handling applications.

There is widespread use of thickeners in various industries, with various aims ranging from low solids in the overflow from clarifiers to the production of high yield stress paste underflow.

The three-year research program will conduct experimental studies to develop and validate new thickening models and concepts, with the aim being improved performance. This will form the basis for new design concepts and thickener technologies.

Research will be provided by CSIRO Minerals, the Parker CRC for Hydrometallurgy, and the University of Melbourne.

The techniques, tools and knowledge generated by the project will be transferred to sponsors of the program, who currently include Alcoa, BHP Billiton, FLDSmidth, Metso, and Rio Tinto, amongst others.
