Rotary fine screens help reclaim wastewater for farming

CST Wastewater Solutions has detailed its role in the successful water reclamation scheme implemented at Echuca on the Murray River, north of Bendigo.

The company supplied project managers Earth Tech with rotary fine screens to remove solids from raw industrial and sewage wastewater.

Earth Tech had signed a 25 year agreement with Coliban Water, which would see it deliver a water reclamation plant, water storage and pipelines to meet the local needs.

The first of the stage achieved 100% water reclamation, stopping wastewater discharge to the Murray River. It also achieved 100% biosolid reuse.

The reclaimed water is rated class B, and five million litres is provided to local farmers every day. The recycle water contains phosphorus and nitrogen nutrients which benefit the environment and reduce the need for fertilisers.

According to CST, its screens were used because they could get fine removal solids down to 500 microns, minimising the amount of fibre and solids passing into the anaerobic reactors.

CST’s partner Global Water Engineering (GWE) supplied and installed the anaerobic plant as well as biogas reuse equipment.

The wastewater is treated with anaerobic sludge blanket technology, followed by extended aeration, sand filtration and chlorine disinfection. Methane generated during the process is burned to heat the plant.

The recycled water is then stored in two lined lagoons and delivered to farmers via a distribution pipe network.
