LINFOX has completed its first year of third-party logistics operations for Kraft, helping to store and distribute finished goods from a 28,000 pallet capacity distribution centre.
The Somerton distribution centre incorporates Dematic’s Colby Drive-In Rack and Protect-a-RACK systems. These are said to optimise storage space efficiency, flexibility, operator productivity and safety.
According to Linfox, it aimed to improve product availability and vehicle turnaround, with the goal to ensure products are available for despatch within three hours, and vehicle turnaround times of under an hour.
The distribution centre distributes more than 420,000 cases in a normal week. Peak periods see 560,000 cases a week. 70% of the order volume involves full pallet handling. The logistics provider claims the storage system allowed it to achieve its key performance indicators.
The storage system is designed so any pallet can be placed anywhere in the system, increasing speeds and eliminating concerns about accidental overloading. The implementer increased the width of the Drive-In lane by 100mm to cater for faster and safer forklift operations.
To ensure the on-going safe operation of the storage system, Dematic carries out a Rack Safety Audit every six months to identify any damaged equipment or potential OH&S hazards concerning the storage system.
