Shipping wharf extension to handle more alumina

RIO Tinto Alcan is extending the Fisherman’s Landing Wharf to speed up and expand the unloading capabilities of the plant.

The $2.15b project will see an extension bigger than three football fields being built in the south-easterly part of the facility, increasing shipping activity for both imports and exports.

A new ship unloader would also add to the handling efficiencies. Contractors Golding will be constructing the facilities.

The extension is said to complement a concurrent expansion of the Yarwun alumina refinery. The first shipment of alumina from the refinery is expected in 2011, after construction completes in June 2009.
