X-ray and neutron cargo scanning

CSIRO will join forces with Chinese security-inspection-system manufacturer Nuctech to commercialise the next generation in cargo scanning technology.

The partnership will develop a new scanner incorporating CSIRO’s neutron technology and Nuctech’s x-ray systems.

According to the CSIRO, its scanning technology can accurately and rapidly detect a wide range of items within freight containers. Metal items such as weapons and organic materials such as narcotics and explosives can be detected in real time without unpacking the container.

Conventional x-ray scanners can detect objects based on their density and shapes, but are insensitive to composition. By combining both imaging technologies, material-specific images of the contents of air cargo containers are produced. Anomalies detected at this stage can then be inspected more closely.

According to the partners, the technology is easily integrated into common scanning systems, is non-intrusive, and can scan a complete container within a minute.
